Relevant tables were then presented around the room where customers could try, and discover, more delicious wines from each style category. But if that all sounded a little too much like hard work, customers could simply work their way around the room trying whichever wines took their fancy.
Winemakers and winery representatives from around the world attending the tasting were keen to chat to customers and show off their wines, while customers got the chance to meet the heroes responsible for making their favourite wines. The Virgin Wines? team were there on mass to ensure the day ran smoothly.
Tasting partners Waiter?s Friend, Gorvett and Stone, Godminster, Fudges, The Well Hung Meat Company and Domino?s spent time inviting customers to try their products, while wine glass company Riedel hosted two tutored tastings. South African wine is unique because most of the grapes produced are based on cross-breading of various vines. This makes the varietal claims of the vineyards fairly humorous as it seems every grape is a mix of two or more competing vines. Regardless, the result is a bevy of unique wines that are often like nothing you’ve tasted before.
The best of the wines in South Africa are the Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinotage. Despite the names, each is the result of a cross-breading program. The Chenin Blanc can be hard to find because the name is not used in the country. Instead, ask for “Steen.” The Pinotage is uniquely South African and excellent. It is a cross breading of Pinot Noir and the Cinsault grape of France. All and all, these are wines you do not want to miss.
Should you go to South Africa just to taste the various wine offerings? Probably not. It is a long, expensive trip for most people of the world. Going for the World Cup, however, makes sense. The primary wine, however, was a Criolla white grape wine that was very heavy. 100 years ago, the French introduced the Malbec grape found in the Bordeaux region of France. The grape is actually not a great match for Bordeaux as the humidity leads to mold problems. The arid, fertile slopes of Argentina at the base of the Andes present a perfect climate for the grape vines and the quality of wine produced is world class. At the risk of being shouted down, I would suggest it is better than what is produced in France.
If you enjoy wines from California, you’ll enjoy wines from Chile. The country is known for producing quality, low price reds. Wine production in California has become costly to the point where $10 to $15 bottles are hard to find. Chile is filling this gap using vines from France. The wine region is located about an hour to the south of the city of Santiago. Chilean wine is excellent for the price, but finding a very high quality, expensive bottle is difficult.
